George orwell on politics6/10/2023 Rather than thinking independently, people pantomime a party line.Īlong with hackneyed phrases and meaningless redundancies, abstract or elevated political language is one of his main targets. He describes a form of indoctrination that happens when people use familiar turns of phrase in political speech. One of his main arguments is that repetitions derive from unoriginal thinking and unoriginal thinking leads to repetitions. On the contrary, Orwell feels that old, dead words should be abandoned, as he argues for original and independent thinking that comes from asserting agency in language-specifically in political speech. The essay is not, as it might at first glance appear, a defense of archaic or traditionally “proper” uses of English. It presents an argument for clear, simple, unpretentious language that attempts to represent its meaning-hence the unambiguous title. The essay is about the connection between politics and poor uses of language. Fittingly, George Orwell's essay “ Politics and the English Language” is accurately described by its title.

The Guermantes Way by Marcel Proust6/10/2023 When the soixante-quinze feuillets weren’t included in the collection acquired by the Bibliothèque Nationale from Proust’s niece Suzy Mante-Proust in 1962, they were considered lost. In the foreword, de Fallois framed Les Soixante-quinze Feuillets as a “precious guide” to understanding In Search of Lost Time. Until recently, the documents were in the possession of publisher Bernard de Fallois, who first mentioned the documents in the foreword for Against Sainte-Beuve, a 1954 collection of previously unpublished Proust essays. Written in 1908 when Proust was a thirty-six-year-old unknown, the pages comprise six major episodes that-in revised form-made their way into Swann’s Way, Within a Budding Grove, The Guermantes Way, and The Fugitive. I didn’t eat a madeleine, but this is a throwback: finally the world is able to read Les Soixante-quinze Feuillets (The Seventy-Five Pages), seventy-five manuscript pages that make up the oldest draft of Marcel Proust’s masterpiece In Search of Lost Time.

Camus albert the plague6/10/2023 Late in 1942, he cautions himself not to include the word in the title. Initially Camus was even wary of the word plague. They also indicate his continuing insistence that his book carry his metaphysical ideas of the absurd. Nearly all these early Plague ideas reveal Camus' concern for a truthful realism and a rejection of sensationalism. During these years Camus kept a series of notebooks and many of the jottings in the notebooks suggest the multitude of ideas that Camus considered before his book was finally completed. It is in this spirit of generalities that The Plague has been considered.Ĭamus' chronicle had been conceived as early as 1939, but was not begun until after France was defeated and the Germans moved their occupation troops into the country. To attempt a thorough analysis would be to suggest that the work was not art but contrived artifice. Camus recognized this difficulty and remarked that only broad outlines should be paralleled in allegorical comment. One critic will charge that the work has been diced into irreparable ruins another will dismiss the same essay as superficial and general. Allegorical interpretations are as elusive and as tenuous as their interpreters. Attempts to explain an allegorical work are, at best, rarely satisfactory.

The time of contempt6/9/2023 He and Yennefer also agree to allow Ciri to see the city's sights, escorted by one of Molnar's faithful employees, her peer, Fabio Sachs. Molnar, who has an old obligation to Yennefer, arranges an essentially unlimited line of credit for her and makes several financial transfers to cover expenses for Ciri's education. He informs the sorceress that her financial movements are being tracked, something Yennefer already suspected. Once they arrive in Gors Velen, Yennefer goes to see her old friend Giancardi Molnar, a dwarven banker. It is Yennefer's intention that Ciri be enrolled at the Aretuza school of magic and that she continue her instruction in the use and mastery of magic. The story in Time of Contempt begins where the previous book left off, essentially with Ciri and Yennefer having just left the Temple in Ellander, on their way to Gors Velen, and ultimately Thanedd Island.
